What is Literacy?

In addition to the definition of literacy the National Assessment of Adult Literacy used, one the American Library Association’s Committee on Literacy also follows, there are two other great definitions that encompass the practical nature of literacy, but also its aspirational qualities that speak of the power literacy can have on an individual’s life.

The first comes from the terrific literacy organization ProLiteracy:

Literacy is the ability to read, write, compute, and use technology at a level that enables an individual to reach his or her full potential as a parent, employee, and community member.

The second comes from UNESCO:

Literacy is a human right, a tool of personal empowerment and a means for social and human development.
